The brilliantly named 'Joanna Gruesome' are a Cardiff-based, male/female vocal-led five-piece indie rock group who say they sound like all of your favourite 80s and 90s indie bands rolled into one. Dinosaur Jr, Lush, The Pastels, My Bloody Valentine, Superchunk, Mega City 4...have a listen and see what you think. They've put an EP online for free download (or pay what you like) Signed to Radio One endorsed Art Is Hard label and having played Indietracks, theirs is a name you can expect to hear popping up online and in conversation. For a better idea of what you can expect from them live, you can check out their video for 'Madison' by clicking here and if you're hungry for more, then click here.

J A W S are an indie rock band from Birmingham who've been making waves recently (see what I did there? Boxxy would have) who took their name not from the legendary Jaws film but from the equally legendary Bond villian. They play around the West Midlands so if you like what you hear below then remember their name, you never know when you might see it on a gig listing. Their new single 'Toucan Surf' is out now. Birmingham based (although we all know that they're from Worcester) 'dark and tropically fused indie' four piece Peace have recently released their new single 'California Daze' hot on the heels of 'Follow Baby' which you can download for free by popping your email adress in the box which (as is standard now) signs you up to their mailing list. The photo above was taken by a happy snapper for the NME, I figured they've featured enough of my videos on their site, they shouldn't be too fused about me using this picture. Also, it's worth mentioning that after I signed up, it took a while for it to show up in my email and when it did, I found it in my Junk folder, but I fished it out of there and it was all good. Signals. are a band from Southampton/Isle of Wight. In their words: 'We are Signals, a female fronted indie / post math rock four-piece from the South of England. We take collective inspiration from artists such as Bon Iver, Thrice, Local Natives, Manchester Orchestra, As Tall As Lions, and Tubelord, amongst others. From this, we have created an eclectic mix of intricate melodies and ambient guitarscapes, held together with energetic rhythm sections - all entwined with subtle and soaring three-part harmony.' Why not have a little listen and see what you make of it. They have a 5 track EP called 'Square Wheels' for sale for £4 on their BandCamp page. Here's a lovely bit of indie pop from Seattle's own Seapony. The band is Jen Weidl (vocals and guitar), Danny Rowland (guitar), & Ian Brewer (bass). Their first release was the 3-song 'Dreaming' single followed by their debut album, Go With Me which puts Jen Weidl's youthful melancholia and yearning on display and wraps it in a blanket of twee/surf/jangle pop. Whilst doing a bit of research for this piece I read that: 'Most songs on Go With Me use no more than three chords, with an average running time of around two-and-a-half minutes. In lieu of a human drummer, the Seattle trio entrusts time-keeping to a vintage gizmo the size of a desktop calculator. The lyrics to 'Dreaming', the track that catapulted them into the spotlight, are just six lines long.' Signed to the mighty Sub Pop offshoot label Hardly Art, this is track 3 from their forthcoming second album 'Falling' which is set for release on 11th September, why not get ahead on things and add this to your collection now. I'd recommend this for fans of 'The Scool', 'Girls Names', 'Blouse', 'Beach Fossils', 'Widowspeak', and 'Le Sera' plus the brilliantly named 'Kids on a Crime Spree'. You'll want to go to the SoundCloud page itself to see the download link. Coldplay - Fix You (Foreverever) The Cult - Peace dog MGMT - Electric Feel Mystery Jets - One 32nd In Love With Elizabeth Batman Scoop - Put Your Hands Up (Before They Turn To Octopi) Led Zeppelin - Stepladder to Heaven Mystery Jets - Someone Purer Wippenberg - Drumster Finlay Quaye - Sunday Shining Spice Girls - Who Do You Think You Are Led Zeppelin - Battle of Evermore The Who - Love Reign O'er Me "If you can make it through this mix, you can make it through most bad things in this world. It's based on a party we threw in Oyster Bay at the ATP 10th Birthday party. Shit got out of hand, The radiators got removed, someone pissed in the fridge, someone shit on the table & someone uprooted a palm tree and left it in the bedroom. It was one of the most awesome parties ever. Basically, Awesome x disgusting² = superperfection Pain isn't a bad thing. Enjoy. PEACE." Vivian Girls are a popular noise pop/indie rock band from Brooklyn, New York. I think there's a good chance you'll recognise the track once you hear it so give a try. I'll confess that I don't know a huge amount about the band other than a familiarity with their music, but I do know that they have supported Sonic Youth and I'd read that their second drummer, Ali Koehler, left to join Best Coast as a tour drummer. Anyways, enjoy the track. I saw ∆ on an facebook event page, they're playing a gig being put on by Birmingham Promoters at the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath on the 30th May (so plently of time yet!) and I was intrigued by the name. It turns out you see, that if you press Alt. and J at the same time, it produces the delta symbol...but only on a mac. Anyways, they used to going under the name 'Films' but changed it after another band called Films' biography was copied word for word, they toyed with the name Daljit Dhaliwal but then settled on ∆. They've just finished a tour with Wild Beasts and Ghost Poet and have now just started another one to promote their new album 'An Awesome Wave' which set for release anyday now. In the meantime, they've upload a demo EP to their SoundCloud page which you can get for free by clicking that download button right there. -----------------------------------------------------------> Tiny Dragons are a three piece from Brighton. A bit indie rock, a bit disco pop. Have a listen, give it a download, throw a party, get horribly drunk, put it on and pretend you're in an episode of Skins; somewhere in the second season. Guillemots are a London-based avant-garde pop and indie rock band. Really? I don't know man, I do like my genres and consider myself pretty damn knowledgeable about ElectroPop and Synth Wave, BritPop, Hip-Hop, Indie and Rock whilst always learning more about Mathcore, Post-Rock, Breakcore and Glitch-Hop. But enough of this showboating, I've listened to a lot of Guillemots to find you, yes you, a free track by them that fits the 'avant-garde pop and indie rock' tag and...I do believe we have a winner.__ |
Making your music folder better, one song at a time.
_Pretty much everyday I seem to find some amazing exclusive tracks that
some awesome artists are giving away for free as a special one off
promotion. Today, it occured to me that instead of just downloading
them, maybe reposting them on facebook if they're special enough/someone I know and
then moving on, I should start a little music blog on here. Even if it
doesn't last forever, it's still a free song for you each day that it
does! I'd say the character of this blog is mostly electropop and singer/songwriter but I've got plans for mathcore, post-rock and glitch-hop. A lot of these tracks have a download limit of 100 so get in there on the quick. I'd also point out that a lot of the songs will need renaming once you've downloaded them so I'd do them one at a time. Archives
